But like the apostle Paul said, Christ died for sinners, of whom I am chief... One hymn says this: "For me He died, for me He lives and everlasting life and light He freely gives." For me.

historical day...?!

so i heard tomorrow is suppose to be a historical day due to the follow up of MLK day unto the presidant obama's inauguration day. we had a company meeting today, and the new boss that took over the building could not stop talking about tomorrow.

tomorrow could be historic, but would it be special?
9/11 was historic, but who still keep that in mind...i know i don't, i forgot about it often until something or someone brings it up.

tomorrow is just another day, nothing special really (in my opinion that is)

hum....what about today...

today is special, today is historic...
actually everyday is special
everyday is and will be historic plus special...

b/c God is in it...God is over it... and God is on top of it.
w/out God is the equation of anyday...it might just well be another day b/c it is...

God is and will always be the One and only One that make a day (anyday that is) historica and special.

Lord God.
This is the day that You have made, i will rejoice and be glad in it.
let this day be historic and special, cause we do not need to wait until tomorrow
(the day that everyone else is claiming and marking it to be historically special).
make each and everyday historic and special in light of your Son Jesus Christ

how sweet is it...?

our manager brought us a tray of different sweet bake goods for our meeting this morning,
i had all five different kinds except for the sugar cookies (but that was the least sweetest of them all actually...)
note: keep in mind i ate all these sweets w/out breakfast this morning.

as i was indulging myself in all these overloads of sweets this morning i was thinking....
how sweet is Jesus Christ?

cause if He is sweeter then them sweets treats i had this morning (which He definitely is!)
then i want to eat Him up until my body can not take it in no more.

it is four days until CHRIST-mas, but i have still yet to eat Him up yet...
i am trying, but i feel like i am barely licking His sweetness.

side note: serving in the skit sure did help me taste a little bit of Jesus yesterday.

i hope you all are chewing on Him em (whoever is out on this lonely site)!
cause i sure want to, even though i only feel them licks.

still in His countless mercy and sweet grace.

a new thing

btw all!
the new educational building sure is educational.
on tuesday nights every room is taken by a bible study group from adults.
that was such a wonderful sight to walk into.
sundays all rooms are filled but of course as well as the stair ways (thanks to our 7th graders)
yea junior high!!!

i still do not know what to think about giving up a big service room for many bible study rooms.

base on tuedays' measure i believe it is worth it,
educationally speaking.

it is off to the educational building i go tonight and tomorrow night as well as sunday night.
haha
everynight is educational.

world's measure or God's measure (in terms of coaching)?

a handful of coaches are getting booted by their programs/teams,
or they are just resigning by themselves this year in different sports.
most of them for the reason being that they are not producing "W's" in their program or teams.
--coaches and programs would even somehow bend the rules or recruiting and what nots to get the "W's"--
if we are measure by w's, then ys should of booted me off long ago with all them basketball and football tourney that we do as a coach and assistant coaching, or as a player on the soccer team, because of not generating enough "w's", but instead producing plenty of "L's" in the end results column.
year in and year out, tourneys after tourney...i get tempted even more to step outside of what i believe in and am convinced of (team, giving it all, and ...) to get that one W,
this lust for them W's and especially for that "ship" is stirring such a envious emotion that would cause me to go astray from the truth and the real measure of sucess outside of our earthly result.
(note: can not share my thoughts completely with words on blog, so jumping to conclusion)
by the world's measure (as well as the yg's minds i 'feel' like - not sure if it is true though)
i am a failer as a coach, generating more L's then W's resulting from all them tourneys that we have been in the past six years and counting (Lord willing if there is more opportunities),
{we did get one Tie this year...all thanks to joe min, lindsey and lillia jdsn for helping out the middles scholars plus two high scholars @ the 1st bridge bowl}
but i do hope and pray that by and in God's measure...i am doing aight as a coach.
more importantly as a spiritual coach to our ys middle scholars...
i want to be right with many w's and "ships", not just aight with tie's or God forbit racking up them l's still...

God'sgiving as suppose to Thanksgiving

when i thinking about thanksgiving last Saturday with the junior high scholars...
we went down the list like this, "i thank God for....family, house, blah blah blah...."
that is all nice and all, plus it is necessary,
but it was not the best way to God'sgiving...
all that i have and all that i presently am, i am very thankful for,
yet when it comes down to it...
the main fact that i need to daily keep on my mind 1st is,
the gift of faith in Christ Jesus i have to claim 4 in my life giving to me by our Almighty God.
this is what i am and what i want to be thankful for as i experience yet another American Thanksgiving holiday follow by Christ-mas swing by soon after.
Jesus, You are the reason for not only these two days,
not only for this season,
but each and everyday...
it is You i "want to" live for.

Why is he homeless and miserable while I am sufficient and content?
What would New York be like if everyone slowed down just a tad?
I wonder how many people with unwashed hands has touched this handle today...
I think the reason why every building is freezing cold is so that people will not linger or loiter around too long.
Everytime I make it home safely is a sign of God's mercy.
I look like such a tourist these days. I even find myself looking up at tall buildings. What's happening to me?
Fashion Week in NYC, BCBG Maz Azaria, etc... My wife should be here, not me!
It's a wonder that anyone can study in this turbulent city.

Why is it that often times it's the pastor who is the last to know? Why is it that so many people in the church often just assume that their pastor is or should be a mind reader and just know everything that's going on in their lives? Why is it that people have to revert to gossip to find out what's going on in people's lives instead of just going up to the person and asking directly? Why is it that people who most often complain about feeling disconnected from the church body are the ones who never make an effort to get involved even when invited? Why is it that people just assume the pastor has the ability to make people who don't get along, get along? Why do people just assume that everyone in the church is a genuine follower of Christ? Why do people get all bent out of shape when they discover that Christians aren't perfect and have serious issues in their lives? Why do people only seek out the pastor when they're in trouble and fail to seek counsel before trouble comes?

This is Jin A. I hope everyone is doing awesome.. I am emailing you to let you know my prayer request and ask for financial support if possible. I had been praying about what I should do this summer since I wanted to do so many things, such as an doing an internship, taking summer courses, volunteering, or going to DTS (disciple training school). Due to this, I had been stressed out. Yet, by a few days ago, my mind has been set with an obedience. God called me to go to DTS even though I have a way less than $3200, which is a fee for DTS lecture. I know that He will fill whatever I am in need for. I have thus laid all my worries and my own desires before the cross and been continuously praying for it. So, please please pray for me and if you get an answer, please aid me financially as well.

Hello dear friends and family!

We hope that you are experiencing the blessing of the Lord’s presence and abundant love in your lives in this New Year. For many, the New Year has brought struggles and heartbreak. Even so, we can rest in knowing that when we give our hurt and pain to the Lord - I mean, when we really fall on our faces and pour our hearts out to Him without reserve, our loving Father is so faithful to give us just what we need.

“When I said, ‘My foot is slipping,’ your love, O Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.” [Psalm 94:18-19]

I am so very thankful for the hope that I always have in Him. No matter what is going on in my life, He is always there and I know when I cry out, He hears and does not remain unmoved by my grief.

Likewise, when I lift my voice in praise, He also hears and is touched. One of the things I have learned over the past months is that regardless of the situation I find myself in, even if I can’t do anything else, I can glorify Him in my body. I can make the conscious effort to raise my hands towards my Father and give Him glory and praise. As Hebrews 13:15 says we are to offer a “sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that confess Him.” He deserves that and so much more!

To fill you in, after our three week orientation in Nairobi, Kenya we flew to Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, where we had been for nearly four weeks. We were staying with another missionary family there until we left for Arandis, which is about a three hour drive west of Windhoek. We arrived in Arandis on Monday afternoon and it was true to its reputation – hot, sunny, and very sandy!

Our initial home in Arandis is a temporary one, but in a month or two we should be moving into our more permanent home which (if we get the one that we are hoping for) will be within view of the school, Talitha Kumi, which is where the Hope’s Kids attend. Those are the children that we will work with.

Our kids have begun to get into a more organized school routine now that we are somewhat settled. Our younger two children will probably attend Talitha Kumi, while our older two will continue to enjoy (or not enjoy- take your pick!) homeschooling with their wonderfully fun and talented teacher (LOL!).

As always, we are so grateful for all of your prayers. Thank you to all of you who have expressed your condolences and to all of you who have been praying for our family following the passing of Steve’s dad. He will be greatly missed but we know he is doing “EXCELLENT” (his personal catch-phrase) now with his Savior and we look forward to a great reunion someday.

As you pray, please thank the Lord for getting us here, for the contract on our house, the sale of Steve’s car, Ashlan’s relief from her daily headaches, and that the money wire finally came through to purchase our vehicle here in Namibia. And could you please continue to pray for the following:

- our family as we merge into the community here in Arandis

- that God will show us how to get involved here early on, as the possibilities are wide open since the needs are so great

- Steve’s mom and siblings as they go through the grieving process and the difficult logistics that have to be handled when someone passes.

Thank you and please keep in touch. We would love to hear from each and every one of you. We pray for you and want to know your joys and concerns as well!

HI, CHURCH! It has been awhile since I have read a post on this site. Actually, I just noticed that the layout has changed. How is everyone doing? Three more months until I see you all again. I am doing well here. Work has been busy, which is good. A bunch of new people (5 new interns, 1 new director, and 1 "other") have arrived over the past month and so it has been nice getting to know them.

Yesterday, I ate the last of my kimchi. Yes, kimchi. I have found no Korean food here AT ALL! Quite a suprise because I thought Koreans were established everywhere. I hear a bunch of Koreans live in New Delhi, which is much nicer than here. So anyway, back to the kimchi. A friend of a yskpc jipsahneem (I think Yoon-Ah's mother?) kindly had her son deliver two medium-sized buckets of the precious goods. (FYI: canned kimchi is just not the same as home-made kimchi.) They lived four hours away, but it so happened that her son had to visit the consulate in Mumbai. The whole kimchi delivery was divinely orchestrated! >) Plus, then their whole family moved to Poland the following week. Crazy, huh? Kimchi is an amazing food - it lasted so long! I did of course sparingly eat it just whenever a craving would hit. But then over 1.5 months later, I decided it was time to finish it off. My last kimchi meal was a stew with a bunch of vegetables and rice and some seasoning. T'was good.

What else? I learned a few useful phrases in Hindi. Here is one: "Ap chol-hae que raja ho!" That means "You are the king of thieves!" Hahah! I plan to use it when someone tries to scam me.

Okay, well the office is closing now and so I have to go. Just wanted to say HI =)

Please fill me in on the details of any updates. How does the education building look now? I figure it will be done by the time I get back (?), and so I will be ready to be educated in that nice new building!

Manassas, VA.....Stand up for God

Do You Believe This???

A girl went to her friends house and
she ended up staying longer than
planned, and had to walk home alone. She wasn't
afraid because it was a small COMMUNITY and she lived only a few blocks away.

As she walked along under the bike trail Diane asked God to keep her safe from harm and danger.

When she reached the alley, which was a short
cut to her house, she decided to take it. However, halfway down the alley she noticed a man standing at the end as though he were waiting for her.

She became uneasy and began to pray, asking
for God's protection.

Instantly a comforting feeling of quietness
and security wrapped round her, she felt as
though someone was walking with her.

When she reached the end of the alley, she
walked right past the man and arrived home
safely.

The following day, she read in the newspaper
that a young girl had been raped in the same
alley just twenty minutes after she had been there.

Feeling overwhelmed by this tragedy and the
fact that it could have been her, she began to
weep.

Thanking the Lord for her safety and to help
this young woman, she decided to go to the
police station.

She felt she could recognize the man, so she
told them her story.

The police asked her if she would be willing to
look at a lineup to see if she could identify him.

She agreed and immediately pointed out the
man she had seen in the alley the night before.

When the man was told he had been identified,
he immediately broke down and confessed.

The officer thanked Diane for her bravery and
asked if there was anything they could do for her.

She asked if they would ask the man one
question. Diane was curious as to why he had not
attacked her.

When the policeman asked him, he answered, "Because she wasn't alone. She had two tall men walking on either side of her."

Amazingly, whether you believe or not,
you're not alone. ( people ) will not stand up for God.......

I really missed all of you last Lord's day. I got to listen to the sermon and I was so blessed. I shared with Nathan and Phoebe Roman 8 about how nothing could separate us from the Love of God during our family worship. I see so clearly how the Spirit was with us and all of you at church just the same. I really thank brother Hiroto for posting sermons week after week. God will see your heart and I know He will be pleased with your work. Let us endure to run the race once again. Glory to Him who gives us renew strength so faithfully everyday! Praise Him

My testimony

After I failed the English test required the pharmacist licence, I was in the trouble with God.
I studied hard and prayed more than ever before for the test.
The test was very difficult for me but I believed in God with whom everything is possible.
As soon as I saw the result I claimed the God, saying " This is what you did for me?"

I was very upset and mad at God.
For several days I quit praying and reading the bible.
I was hurt by God. He ignores me, or even does not remember me at all.

During the last Sunday service I still could not open my mind fully.
There were more less people than usaul in the service and　some words of hymns did not show on the screen.
I closed my eyes and started praying becuase I could not sing without the words.
God sent the Holy Spirit in the shabby trailer and onto miserable me.
We were only less than 20 people but what I heard was thousand's shouting and praising.
Our praise team has only 3 people but I was in the big orchestra and chorus.
I was overwelmed with the holy magnificence and just cried and cried.
I felt His perfect consolation and became completely comforted.

God also sent me the very sermon which I needed most at the time.
Now I would like to confess that God is good not because he gives me everything I request but sometimes says NO to give me more hope and perseverance beyond my expectation.

After the service I told Yujin that the praise music was particularly wonderful.
He answered me his drum was especially worse.
I thank the praise team and pastor Joe for helping me make peace with God.
I also thank God that he first showed his mercy on my hardness.

Sometmes, or more often I am discouraged when I think of the number of our EM members.
I changed, however, my attitude to think after I listened to the last sermon by Pastor Joe.
Even if our EM has very small number of people and it does not increase I found we have the best things within us.
First of all, we have the most excellent sermon which always touchs and awakens our heart and guides us to the way toward our Lord.
Second, we sent Lillia to the land where desparately need our help.

cause and effect (recycling)

been really into recycling these past few weeks. always been aware of it , but encourage to find out that my mom is so diligent with it every Tuesday morning. Makes me want to contribute and serve a common purpose aligned with hers to do what we can or called to do. I been somewhat obsessive compulsive about it, I pick up whatever I can get my hands on while I’m out and about, and bring it back home for Tuesday morning recycling service pick ups. I recently after a couple of years of noting we should recycle our ju bals every Sunday took the action to bring a box for our youth group sanctuary. (when it gets full…I will be sure to take it to my office to recycle or bring it back home). It hurt me personally at work when I see other throw away their cover page in which we produce many by hundreds a day into the trash can instead of putting into the recycle bin which is also right next to our printer. Pooh to those wasters (but I am one of them as well). I pick them up outta the trash can whenever I can, but will my effort count?
I will continue (sometimes I get irritated that I don’t) pick it up, because I want to do what I can.
Next thing I need to work on…turn off my computer everyday when I leave work. We studied this several weeks ago in our theology Bible study, but I have not yet done so.

Wonderful Retreat!

I would like to say the retreat wsa so meaningful to me.
First we could share good time with KM single group for the first time in the retreat and second, I had more chance to talk with our EM college students.
Above all we had very encouraging sermons from Pastor John 4 times, which taught us about the kingdom very well.
Thank God for making us HOT from lukewarm through the reteat.
I also thank you all for the participating and loving in every moment.

With pastor Joe gone on a mission trip, I observe that Nathan and Phoebe are more clingy to me. They know that Daddy loves them and that Daddy will come back but I guess that they can't help it but to be bit anxious. I think our lives a bit that way too. It is hard to wait for Christ with hope. We get weary, start to complain and doubt His love for us. I just wanted to remind everyone and my self that He is coming back for us and that His love is never changing and eternal.

I praise God everyday for our ministry. It is wonderful to see us growing in Him. Let us continue to bring glory to Him in all we do.

Feeling Guilty about Summer Break?

Some of you who are in college are already attending summer session and/or working at summer jobs. I want to remind you to remember one important thing. Don't forget to rest. Too many of us feel a sense of guilt if we're not actively doing something every moment of the day and that's not good for anyone. Ecclesiastes says there is a time to labor and a time to rest. Don't feel guilty about resting or taking a vacation or taking on some "down time." Our God is not impressed by workaholics. God is glorified by a person who is fully alive.

DC Trafficking

Sex Trafficking:If you are unfamiliar with sex trafficking, let me give you a few definitions and statistics. Human trafficking is the modern practice of slavery. It is the third largest criminal industry in the world today, after arms and drug dealing. There is an estimated 17,500 people trafficked annually into the United States alone. What is even more shocking, is that the number of US citizens trafficked within this country are even higher, with an estimate of more than 200,000 American children at high risk for being trafficked each year. 70% of human trafficking victims are sex traffic cases.Reaching Out:Over Memorial Day weekend I will be participating in "mission trip" in Washington, DC.

My team and I we will be reaching out to hurting young women who are trapped in sex trafficking or prostitution. In the evening (3am after the clubs close), we will be hitting the streets of DC and passing out hotline cards and cookies to prostitutes, in order to show these women somebody truly cares about them. Afterwards, we will be staying at Motel 8 on New York ave, in DC, as that's where prostitutes take their clients. Next day, we will be going to the Juvenile Detention center to hold a bible study for the young women there.

So I'm stepping way way out of my comfort zone and out on faith to see what part God will have me play in this major DC issue. I have a strong conviction that it is not enough to offer hope, but rather it is necessary to go beyond hope and offer Christ. It is only through Christ and the changing power of the gospel, that a person trapped in sin be truly set free and their soul restored.Pray for me this weekend, it's going to a challenge!

I'm not sure where to start in telling you about my mission trip, so let me just jump right in.

INTENCITY: was a fitting name for my mission trip into DC, as it was very intense. It was a unique trip, not the sort of trip that filled a specific need, and in the end we couldn't all pat ourselves on the back and make another check mark on our "good deeds" list. Rather it was step-one in listening for a soft voice crying for help. Can you hear that cry? It's the cry of thousands of women who are trapped in sex trafficking, unable to get out, lost under society, without any hope of being found. This weekend I learned that there is HOPE for these victims, but this HOPE is only found through Christ.

RESTORATION MINISTRIES: My mission team worked alongside an established ministry named Restoration Ministries < www.restorationministriesdc.org>. This ministry was founded and directed by Candace Wheeler. Candace trained us and shared with us her passion for freeing through Jesus Christ those that are trapped in the slavery of sex trafficking.

SATURATION: How is it possible to break the cycle of sin? How do you teach a person to show integrity and dignity who was never treated in such a way? How do you restore the soul of a woman that has been sexually violated? How do you convince a victim to take ownership of their life and dream of the future? How do you believe that God has plans and a future for each and every person no matter what they have been through? How do you restore faith in God after such trauma? And the questions continued to fill my mind and soul. The mission trip started with intense training, as I watched, with my team, several hours of documentaries on sex trafficking and child prostitution. I was saturated with information that opened my eyes and heart to the reality of this issue. Feeling hopeless, it was a natural response to pray and to weep on behalf of these women. The only hope and comfort that I found was in our living God that is all in favor of justice and mercy, who we can freely call upon.

LIGHT WITHIN DARKNESS: Whenever I drive over the bridge into DC I can always feel the darkness and spiritual warfare present in the city. This time it was different, as the Lord was our light and your prayers were felt. We checked into the Super 8 Motel on New York Ave and found it be surprisingly clean and comfortable. Around 11pm, we formed into teams of threes and walked around various parts of DC, armed with coffee and hotline cards, in search of prostitutes and/or victims of sex trafficking. Chinatown was my group's beat. We drove around and around and around, in search of women standing on corners. As with finding anything that is illegal, it is not easy to find victims of sex trafficking. This evening was no exception, especially since there were police on just about every corner. Collectively the team was only able to pass out a few hotline cards. This evening His will for us was to be light in a dark place. Psalm 27. "The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?"

ABOUT MY FATHER'S BUSINESS: One could easily miss the small old building on the side of the busy road. But on Sunday morning this is where a small urban church meet. The church was named About My Father's Business < http://amfbgrace.blog.com/> and that's what they were all about as they reached out to the homeless in DC. They embraced us with hugs and love and the church was on fire about praising the Lord and preaching the word. DC

JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER: I had the privilege of meeting twelve young ladies in the DC Juvenile Detention Center. It is never asked why the girls are in there and after a few minutes of sitting with the girls I quickly forgot that we were in a detention center. Candace passed out a Christian magazine, which contained stories with bible lessons. The girls quickly picked an article entitled "Is it OKAY to be GAY?" I felt nervous for a second as this is a hard topic to address, especially for the younger generation, as being gay is acceptable these days. Candace facilitated this topic with elegance and grace as she taught the truth of God. Afterwards, they worked on a craft project where they had the opportunity to work together to create a beautiful quilt. The room was filled with complements, creativity, and giggles, as these twelve young ladies were just being kids. Christ came for these girls, to give them life. John 10:10 "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

CONCLUSION: As you can see, the weekend wasn't a neat package of carefully scripted events, rather it was a sober primer on some of the brutal realities facing women around the world and in our own city. Whatever our expectations going in, each of us left the weekend with a new view of the world and hearts burdened to continue to labor towards justice and mercy. Whether or not I reached the women I was looking for on the streets of Chinatown, God reached what he was looking for in me- a heart that is tender towards his people and willing to face the difficulties of sin with hope and prayer and dedicated service. I am looking forward to continuing to learn more about the plight of women trapped in human trafficking and slavery and applying myself to work on their behalf. Thank you for partnering with me in prayer and support, I honestly couldn't have made it without you.

Road Rage

Washington D.C. rates #5 in the nation for the worst road rage my friends. This past week I was the recipient, not once but twice, of a finger gesture which I will not name. I think all of you know what I'm talking about. In both cases, the drivers who gave the gesture were both in the wrong. I'm not saying I'm a perfect driver, but in these two specific cases, they were the ones who messed up. Why is it that people who mess up and know it are the ones who take the offensive? Could it be so that they could cover up their own mistake by launching a preemptive attack? It got me thinking about our relations with our neighbors. When we blow it with our friends, family, and colleagues, do we react with humility and honesty, or do we overcompensate with pride, self-righteousness, and arrogance? Do we fess up to our mistake or do we exacerbate the situation by spinning the truth and blowing a smoke screen? When things like this go on and on without any resolution or reconciliation, the natural consequence is disaster. Whether it's road rage, divorce, mass shootings, or the like, we reap what we sow. Think about that the next time you are on the road, in an argument with a friend, or disagreement with your spouse. God knows we will make mistakes but the question is will you admit your mistake and right the wrong?

In the parable of the talents, the master of the servants says, "Well done good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!" Rejoice when the Lord places greater tasks or responsibilities on your lap. He's rewarding you!

"Everyday is a Passover for me"

One of our youth members expressed his understanding of God's grace this way: "Everyday is a Passover for me." He was commenting on the tragic events of last week and how his only source of comfort and peace was the knowledge that Christ is perpetually his passover lamb. Sisters and brothers in the Lord, remember the words of the Heidelberg Catechism:

Question #1: What is your only comfort, in life and in death?
Answer: That I belong - body and soul, in life and in death - not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

May the peace that transcends understanding be with all of you this week.

A Grief Observed

When we speak of the reality of grief, we are talking about pain. It is a pain that penetrates the skin of a person and plunges to the deepest recesses of the person’s being. It is a pain that grips the soul with a vise-like pincer that brings with the pain an excruciating sense of mourning. We use the term grief to describe pain that assaults the deepest level of our being. We often use the metaphor of the broken heart. The broken heart really describes a weeping soul, a soul that is cloaked in the darkest night.

When we speak of grief, we speak about an emotion of which the Scriptures are profoundly aware. We speak of an emotion that was most poignantly manifested in the life and the experience of our Lord Himself. Jesus was described as a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. His acquaintanceship with grief was not merely a sympathetic or empathetic awareness of other people’s pain. Rather, His experience of grief was a pain that He felt within Himself. To be sure, His pain was the result of His perception, not of His own shortcomings, but of the great evils that plague this world.

On the other hand, when we experience grief, our grief is usually wrapped up with some kind of personal loss. In my own experience, when I think of grief, there are only a few personal recollections that force their way into my mind. The first and most painful was the grief associated with the death of my father when I was seventeen years old. This was the man who, humanly speaking, was the anchor of my soul, the rock of stability in our home and in my life. When he was reduced to frailty and became incapacitated by multiple strokes, and wasted away finally to death itself, I was driven to despair. The loss of this man, who was my greatest earthly hero, left a scar on my soul that remains even to this day. I also think personally of my sense of loss when my dear friend Jim Boice was taken home to glory in 2000. It was not simply the loss of a friend, but a loss of a comrade in an ongoing battle that left me with such sorrow. The pangs of that sorrow were multiplied by my sense of loss, not only to me, but to the church of our time.

Beyond those personal losses, the loss of friends, the loss of comrades, always bring to me a certain measure of grief. In my own heart, however, I know that nothing grieves me more than to see the Gospel compromised in the church. It’s not the wickedness of the pagan that breaks my heart. It’s the compromise of the Christian that grieves my soul. Finally, when I look at grief, as I experience it in my life and read of it in Scriptures, I know that with it always comes the clear and present danger of an emotion that can turn sour. Yet the emotion itself is perfectly legitimate. If we fail to deal with our grief, if our mourning goes beyond sorrow into bitterness, then we have allowed pain to abscess and become poison. We must examine the griefs we experience and take care that they never become the occasion for sin. They never did that to Jesus. We pray they won’t do it to us.

If God is all powerful, then why does he allow suffering?

A recent controversial book on this matter was titled When Bad Things Happen to Good People. A common objection to religion is, How can anybody believe in God in light of all of the suffering that we see and experience in this world?

John Stuart Mill raised this classic objection against the Christian faith: If God is omnipotent and allows all this suffering, then he is not benevolent, he is not a kindhearted God, he is not loving. And if he’s loving to the whole world and allows all this suffering, then he’s certainly not omnipotent. And given the fact of evil, or the fact of suffering, we can never conclude that God is both omnipotent and benevolent. As brilliant as John Stuart Mill is, I have to demur at that point and look at what the Scriptures say about these things.

Keep in mind that from a biblical perspective, suffering is intrinsically related to the fallenness of this world. There was no suffering prior to sin. I interpret Scripture to say that suffering in this world is part of the complex of God’s judgment on the world. You are asking, How can a righteous judge allow a criminal to suffer? How can a just judge allow a violent offender to be punished? The question we should ask is, How can a just judge not allow punishment for those who have committed acts of violence or crimes of any sort? Behind that question always stands the holiness of God and his perfect righteousness. Our understanding of God is rooted and grounded in the teaching of Scripture that he is the just Judge. The Judge of all of the earth always does right.

In the ninth chapter of John, the Pharisees say to Jesus, “Why was this man born blind? Was it because of his sin or the sins of his parents?” Jesus said, “Neither one.” We can’t come to the conclusion that an individual’s suffering in this world is in direct proportion to that individual’s sin. That was what Job’s friends did when they came to him and tormented him by saying, “Boy, Job, you’re really suffering a lot. This must be an indication that you’re the most miserable sinner of all.” But the Bible says that we can’t use such a formula. The fact is, if there were no sin in the world, there would be no suffering. God allows suffering as part of his judgment, but he also uses it for our redemption—to shape our character and build up our faith.

Please join me in praying for the V-Tech community during this traumatic experience. Our two brothers Insang and Danny are fine. Nevertheless, many students lost their lives or were wounded by this tragedy. Please pray for healing for everyone involved, even for the family of the shooter. Only the grace of Jesus Christ can heal this.

God, who needs nothing, loves into existence wholly superfluous creatures in order that He may love and perfect them. If I may dare the biological image, God is a "host" who deliberately creates His own parasites; causes us to be that we may exploit and "take advantage of" Him. Herein is love. This is the diagram of Love Himself, the inventor of all loves.

Good Friday/Easter

Love is Risky

There is no safe investment. To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it up carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket-safe, dark, motionless, airless- it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The only place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell.
